The ICC T20 World Cup Afghanistan Squad SWOT Analysis

The ninth edition of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will get underway this week. The highly-anticipated tournament will be played from June 1 to 29 in the United States of America and the West Indies.

Afghanistan will be one of the record 20 teams that will be fighting for the T20 supremacy. The Asian team is drawn in Group C along with co-hosts West Indies, New Zealand, Uganda and Papua New Guinea. With West Indies and New Zealand in the group, Afghanistan will have to come up with something special to progress ahead of the group stage and seal a place in the Super 8.

The Rashid Khan-led side will open their campaign on June 3 against Uganda who are making their debut in the T20 World Cup. It will be followed by the game against New Zealand on June 7 before they lock horns against Papua New Guinea and West Indies on June 13 and 17 respectively. As Afghanistan gear up to begin their campaign in the T20 World Cup, we are taking a look at their squad’s strength, weakness, opportunities and threat.

Afghanistan squad SWOT analysis:

Strength:

Spin:

Afghanistan have one of the strongest if not the strongest spin attack in the ICC T20 World Cup this year. The squad is filled with a variety of spinners who can cause problems for any opposition. Their captain Rashid Khan will be spearheading the spin attack that also features the likes of left-arm spinner Noor Ahmad, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Afghanistan squad SWOT analysis

What makes the spinners even more threatening for the opposition is that most of them can operate at any stage of the game including the powerplay. In fact, Mujeeb is known for his ability to make an impact with the new impact. Afghanistan will be relying heavily on the spinners and they do have the attack that can help them do well.

Rashid Khan:

Rashid Khan could turn out to be Afghanistan’s X factor in the T20 World Cup. The vastly experienced leg-spinner has played cricket all around the world and is widely regarded as one of the best if not the best T20 spinner of this generation. Time and again, he has shown that he can change the course of the game with his bowling and the former world number one bowler will be eyeing a strong display in the tournament.

Weakness:

Fast-bowling:

The fast-bowling especially in the death overs has been a big concern for Afghanistan for quite some time now. The likes of Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi and Fareed Ahmad Malik are talented pacers and can cause a lot of trouble for the opposition batters but there are still question marks over their ability to do well in the death overs.

In recent times, Afghanistan have lost several close games due to the same reason and will be hoping that their fast-bowlers deliver in the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Power-hitters:

Afghanistan do not really have any power-hitters who can take the attack to the opposition from the start. While the likes of Gulbadin Naib, Mohammad Nabi and even Rashid Khan are capable of playing the big shots, they would have liked someone who could go all out from the very start.

Opportunities:

Build on the ODI World Cup success:

Afghanistan had a stunning campaign in the ODI World Cup last year and would be looking to build on that success in the T20 World Cup this year. The Afghan outfit received praise from all around for their performance in the tournament.

They finished at sixth spot in the points table ahead of the likes of England, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka after winning four games. Afghanistan had defeated England, who were the defending champions, and previous champions Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well.

Improve track record:

The upcoming tournament will also give Afghanistan an opportunity to improve their track record in the T20 World Cup. While Afghanistan are widely regarded as the most improved international team in recent years, their performance in the T20 World Cup has left a lot to be desired. In the last edition, they could not win even one game and will be looking to do well in the upcoming edition.

Threat:

Tough group:

Afghanistan are in a tough group and will have to be at their absolute best to make it past the group stage. Only two of the five teams will be progressing to the Super 8s stage and with West Indies and New Zealand in the group, Afghanistan’s chances of qualifying are very slim. Afghanistan, however, have defeated West Indies in the T20 World Cup in the past and will be fancying their chances of causing an upset again.
