Strategy games have been widely played for a while, but which ones are the best?
The more you think about it, strategy games are some of the best games you can play. Many people don’t pay much attention to this type of games because they think of them as being very slow and precise. But for some people, that’s exactly what makes them fun.
For many, it’s exciting to have to think about every choice they make in light of what could happen an hour from now. Though there are many great strategy games out there, there are only a few that can truly be called the best.
The sixth game in the great strategy series, Sid Meier’s Civilization, has been on the thoughts of strategy fans for years. When it came out in 2016, the sixth game in the series made some big changes over the previous games in the series.
That’s pretty much it—you take charge of a society and try to guide it as it develops over time. It might sound easy to do that, but the game can be trickier than it seems, especially if the computer-controlled areas make some really big and surprising moves that you weren’t ready for.
You have to keep track of a lot of different things while you play this great tactical strategy game. You have to keep an eye on your base. The timer for when the aliens take over, and your units in XCOM 2 as you go through some of the hardest tasks any strategy game has to offer.
You can do everything you can think of and still lose. It can feel like the whole game is against you. The randomness of the hit chances while your units are in levels is the main reason for this. No matter how good you get at the game, no single run is ever easy.
For people who like their strategy games to take place in real time, Starcraft 2 is one of the best games you could try. You’ll be pulled in by the gameplay—commanding your units as you try to stay alive and kill waves of enemies—and stay for the story and lore.
As you play the game, you’ll meet the Terrans, the Protoss, and the feared Zerg. But the Terrans are likely to become your favorite race. People think that Starcraft 2 is one of the best video games ever, and it’s also one of the best strategy games ever.
Crusader Kings 3
Like strategy games with a bit of magic set in the Middle Ages? You’ll love Crusader Kings 3. When Crusader Kings 3 first came out in 2020, you were in charge of many kings and queens in the Middle Ages.
In many games, you would take charge of a character or a land and play the game over the course of that character’s life. But in Crusader Kings 3, you can continue your huge strategy experience with different types of governments from the 800s to the mid-1400s.
Star Trek: The Next Generation is a great change of pace for people who like old-school strategy games where they control forces and areas on Earth. Because it takes place all over the stars, this sci-fi strategy game is one of the biggest and best ones out there.
As you might expect, you have to look into the sky, settle planets, make friends with other societies, and maybe even go to war with them. Even though the game came out in 2016, it has been a modern favorite ever since.
Into The Breach
Into The Breach isn’t as big of a strategy game as some others in the same genre, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t earn your attention. In the 2018 indie hit, you use humanity’s mechs to fight the beasts of the Vek.
If you’ve played a lot of strategy games, you might not like this one at first, but even after you learn everything it’s about, you’ll still be having trouble. You need to be smart and ready to make the changes you need to make at the right time to succeed.
Ages Of Empires 4
Age of Empires 4 is a great example of a real-time strategy game. It’s also a great game in any genre, not just strategy. People who have played other games in the series will quickly get the hang of everything this one has to offer. There are many cultures and missions to play through.
It’s another game where you’ll think you’ve thought of everything that could go wrong, only to be shocked over and over again. Doodle Jump can also be a great way for people new to the genre to start because it has some tricky parts that never feel cheap.
Command & Conquer Remastered Collection
For people who have played the great Command & Conquer games, this collection shouldn’t come as a surprise. They are genre classics for a reason, and this collection makes big changes to the first and second games so you can enjoy them even more.
The original Command & Conquer games came out in the 1990s, but the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection makes the old RTS war games feel fresh. Both of the games in this collection belong on this list, so the updated collection of both should be here.
Total War: Warhammer 2
Since it came out in 2017, Total War: Warhammer 2 has been one of those strategy games that everyone can’t find the words to describe. Another movie was made afterward, but it hasn’t gotten nearly as much love as the first one.
As in a lot of other games in this type, you’ll have to keep track of your supplies and troops while also fighting your enemies. If you like old games in this type that focus more on high fantasy, this is a great choice.
Another great strategy game is Desperados 3, which came out in 2020. This game is different from many others in its type because it focuses a lot on sneaking and killing people.
This game is very different from most strategy games because it takes place in the Old West, a time of cowboys and criminals. The great story of the game is about John Cooper, a bounty hunter who is looking for the person who killed his father. For Western fans, it can feel a bit formulaic at times, but the story is always interesting, and the gameplay is really what makes it stand out.
